De Palestijnse journalist Anas Al-Sharif (28), werkzaam voor Al Jazeera in Gaza, wordt openlijk bedreigd door het Israëlische bezettingsleger na zijn live verslaggeving over burgers die bezwijken door uithongering.
Journalisten in Gaza werken onder levensgevaarlijke omstandigheden. Ondanks herhaalde bedreigingen, aanvallen en lastercampagnes blijft Anas Al-Sharif verslag doen van het genocidale geweld in Gaza. Zijn moed is uitzonderlijk.
Elke dag dat wordt gezwegen, vergroot het risico dat ook Anas Al-Sharif slachtoffer wordt van het geweld dat al honderden journalisten het leven heeft gekost. Stichting Plant een Olijfboom doet een dringende oproep aan Nederlandse en Europese politici om onmiddellijk in actie te komen.

Dear Vice President, Ms. Kallas and Commissioner, Mr. McGrath,
Given your responsibility to protect democratic values, press freedom and the right to report safely, I call upon you to finally act and protect journalists in Gaza. The international community relies on these journalists as our eyes and ears since international media is repeatedly banned from entering Gaza. Their lives are continuously at risk, and as time passes, there are fewer journalists to report on the war crimes committed by Israel and the fate of the Palestinian people.
JOURNALISTS MUST NEVER BE TARGETS
Journalists are regularly subjected to personal threats by the Israeli army. On 20 July, journalist Anas Al-Sharif (28) working for Al-Jazeera in Gaza, once again received serious threats from the Israeli army after reporting on civilians collapsing from hunger. His colleague Hossam Shbat was recently murdered after similar threats. Journalists are literally silenced.
In no other conflict or genocide so many journalists have been murdered. How much longer will the international community allow this to happen?

We count on you to take responsibility and ensure that what we promise and agreed in Europe do not remain empty words. We urgently call on you to do everything in your power to protect Anas Al-Sharif and ask you to:
Publicly and unequivocally express support for Anas Al-Sharif and his colleagues in Gaza;
Take urgent protective measures for journalists in Gaza, in cooperation with international human rights organizations;
Speak out strongly against the censorship of Palestinian journalists, including on social media, and to actively advocate for press freedom;
Take action and put sanctions on the Israeli occupation regime to stop attacking journalists, put an end to the genocide and abide by international law.
Respect the Rule of Law in Europe. Protect Palestinian journalists, protect Anas Al-Sharif, protect the truth.
